Tips for troubleshooting your furnace.

Hand adjusting thermostatWe’ve all been in this situation at some point. it’s the first cold day of the year, you go to turn your furnace on, and nothing happens! Before calling the professionals at Burke Energy, you may be able to troubleshoot the problem by checking the following…

Thermostat

  • Make sure the batteries are still working!
  • Is your system set to heat, and is the temperature set about 5 degrees warmer than room temperature.
  • Have a forced air furnace? Make sure the thermostat fan switch is “on”.

Fuel level

  • Check it! It may seem obvious, but it’s a step that some people forget about.

Circuit breaker

  • Locate the circuit for the furnace in your breaker, and make sure it is flipped to “on”.

Blown fuses

  • Check your fuse box. If you see melted metal or a discolored glass window at the top of the fuse for the furnace, you need to replace it with a new one.
  • Take the old, broken fuse to the hardware store to make sure you’re buying the right one!

Emergency power switch

  • Many furnaces have an emergency power switch on the wall that looks just like a light switch. Make sure that it is switched on, keeping in mind that the furnace may take a few minutes to start once you flip the switch.

Dirty filters

  • Check your filters! Dirty filters can keep your furnace (or AC system) from running efficiently, or running at all!

Obstructions

  • Make sure that heating registers in your home are open, and that outdoor furnace vents are not blocked by snow, leaves, or other obstructions.

It may be time to replace your furnace

Preventive maintenance

  • The smartest thing you can do is schedule an annual heating system tune-up and cleaning early in the fall, before you need to turn the system on for the first time.
